What is stress?

The autonomic nervous system regulates bodily functions primarily at a subconscious level and is the mechanism that controls the fight or flight response.

When the autonomic nervous system senses a real or imagined danger, this fight or flight mechanism kicks in and releases adrenaline to prepare the body to fight off this danger. This reaction is known as stress and is a perfectly normal function that keeps us safe. It is only a temporary and once the danger, or perceived danger has passed, then the system returns to normal.

However, if this process continues once the danger has gone, then long term stress can result.

What are the symptoms of stress and anxiety?
